Two Become One
In creation, God formed Adam and Eve and declared that the two would become one flesh. Not teammates. Not business partners. One.
For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.
~ Genesis 2:24 (NIV)
Becoming one is not something we invent. It is something God creates. But we participate in it through humility, forgiveness, and service.
Unity is not automatic
Some elements in nature bond easily. Others fracture unless handled gently. Marriage behaves the same way. Unity requires:
- Honesty
- Grace
- Patience
- Mutual submission
- Daily choices to move toward each other rather than away
Unity is spiritual before it is emotional.
Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.
~ Mark 10:9 (NIV)
Marriage as a picture of the gospel
Paul teaches that marriage reflects Christ and the church. This means our covenant is not only about us. Our unity becomes a small window into the faithfulness of God.
When a husband lays down pride and chooses love, he shows a glimpse of Christ. When a wife extends grace and honor, she displays the beauty of the church receiving her King.
Oneness grows in the ordinary
True unity is built in the unseen places:
- Choosing not to speak a harsh word
- Serving when it costs something
- Confessing sin without excuses
- Listening before responding
These small, humble acts build a strong bond that reflects the heart of Jesus.
A prayer for today
Father, make our marriage a place of unity. Help me lay down selfishness and pride. Teach me to move toward my wife with compassion and grace, just as You move toward Your people.
